First Solo Flight Checklist for New Pilots

The ten checks our instructors want to hear you say out loud. A steady onshore breeze along the dune made for easy soaring. Pilots kept a wide spacing and passed each other with the ridge on the right.

Before you launch

Everyone who flew landed with a grin and a new list of things to practise.

  • Keep the ridge-soaring right-of-way rules
  • Carry a reserve and know how to throw it
  • Land early when the air turns rough
  • Check the wing, lines and harness out loud

The sky will still be there tomorrow. Land when your gut says so.

The first climb of the day usually comes from the darkest, driest ground in full sun. Rock faces and car parks work well by late morning.

How crowded was the beach? We are thinking of going in the spring.

Jonah Brickell

Agreed, that one catches a lot of people out.

I would add one thing: always check the forecast twice on the day.

Sam Okafor

This is exactly what I needed before my trip next month. Saving it.

Great write-up. Would love a follow-up on how it changes in lighter wind.

Thanks! We used a pretty old action camera, nothing fancy.

Spring is usually quieter, go for it.

We tried this at our local spot last weekend and it worked a treat.

Claire Dumont

Any tips for doing this on a smaller board?
