Fin Setups for Choppy Slalom Days

Shorter, stiffer and a touch more rake: what changed when the bay turned to chop. A little more downhaul flattened the sail and made it far easier to hold through the gusts. The trade-off was slightly less low-end power.

The setup that worked

We swapped fins twice during the session. The shorter fin gave up some upwind angle but stayed locked in when the chop picked up.

  • Set downhaul before outhaul
  • Match fin size to the chop, not just the sail
  • Check the mast foot pin before launching
  • Move harness lines in small steps

Tune the rig on the beach, not on the water. You will get more runs in.

Kai Andersen, Gustline crew

Harness line length matters more than most riders think. Moving them two centimetres forward took the strain off tired forearms.

Clear and practical, thanks. Bookmarking for the winter.

I made the same mistake for two seasons before someone pointed it out.

Spring is usually quieter, go for it.

The photos are unreal. Which lens were you using?
