Hoses, valves and one cheap o-ring that saves a session. The first hour felt clumsy for everyone. By the end, the whole group was foiling through the lulls.
What to look for
Wing size is only half the story. Board volume decides how easily you get up on the foil in the lulls.
- Check foil bolts before every session
- Ride with a buddy on downwinders
- Start with a larger board than you think
- Pump from the legs
The foil wants to fly. Your job is mostly to stop getting in its way.
Mara Quill, Gustline crew
Pumping efficiently comes from the legs, not the arms. The best riders barely move the wing between swells.

I made the same mistake for two seasons before someone pointed it out.
Glad it helped, have a great trip!

Any tips for doing this on a smaller board?
Watching this made me want to go out right now, even though it is raining.
We tried this at our local spot last weekend and it worked a treat.
Great write-up. Would love a follow-up on how it changes in lighter wind.
Brilliant session. The water looks perfect.

Clear and practical, thanks. Bookmarking for the winter.
